How Networks Work
A network is a collection of devices connected together. Networks can be small, like a home Wi-Fi network, or huge, like the internet. Data is transmitted in packets, which are small units of information that travel independently and are reassembled at their destination.
The OSI Model
The OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model is a framework that describes how data travels through a network. It has seven layers, each with a specific function. The layers range from physical cables and electrical signals to the applications that users interact with.
The Internet
The internet is a global network of networks. It connects millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks. The internet uses TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) to ensure data is sent and received correctly. Key internet services include the World Wide Web, email, file sharing, and streaming.
Protocols
Protocols are rules that govern how data is transmitted across networks. Common protocols include:
HTTP/HTTPS – for web browsing
FTP – for file transfer
SMTP – for email
TCP/IP – the foundation of the internet
DNS – translates domain names to IP addresses
Wireless Networks
Wireless networks use radio waves to connect devices without cables. Wi-Fi is common in homes, offices, and public spaces. Cellular networks like 4G and 5G provide mobile connectivity. Bluetooth connects devices over short distances.

The Future of Networking
Networking continues to evolve. 5G offers faster speeds and lower latency. The Internet of Things (IoT) connects everyday objects. Software-defined networking (SDN) makes networks more flexible and programmable. These innovations will enable new applications and services.
