HANDAXE

Ref #:  87

Type:  Handaxe

Material:  Flint

Period:  Late Acheulian  250,000 - 100,000 years ago

Provenance:  Aisne, France

Measurements:  12.5 cm x 9 cm

Comments:  Interesting incorporation of natural features into design.  Specifically meant for right hand use.  Removal of material where web of hand would be.  Two natural circular nodule depressions on cortex perfectly serve to hold index and middle finger when axe is held for use.  Opposing thumb rests on portion of cortex left on other side for sure grip.  Heavy patina on one side from exposure and traces of old collection label.
