MOUSTERIAN - EUROPE

JASPER UNIFACIAL TRIANGULAR HANDAXE

Ref #:  516

Type:  Mousterian Unifacial Triangular Handaxe

Material:  Fontmaure Jasper

Period:  Middle Paleolithic Period  80,000 - 40,000 years ago

Provenance:  Fontmaure, West Central France

Measurements:  10.5 cm x 7.5 cm

Comments:  Atypical design with worked proximal end for comfortable grip and a faceted proximal platform for the palm when held and used.  No signs being used as a core that would explain the defined point and too thick and large for being useable flake point.   Well made for right hand use only with deep flake removed on flat side to allow a better grip with the forefingers when held.
