OLDOWAN - NORTH AFRICA

PEBBLE CHOPPER

Ref #:  498

Type:  Pebble Chopper

Material:  Quartzite

Period:  Lower Paleolithic 1.8 - 1 million years ago

Provenance:  Algeria - Sahara Desert, North Africa

Measurements:  9 cm x 8.7 cm

Comments:  The distal chopping edge shows obvious prehistoric damage from pounding use.  This damage does not exist anywhere else on the perfectly smooth surfaces of the remainder of this pebble chopper axe.
