CAPSIAN TRADITION AFRICAN NEOLITHIC COLLECTION

GROOVED AXE

Ref #:  238

Type:  Grooved Axe

Material:  Hardstone

Period:  Capsian Tradition African Neolithic  8500 - 3000 years ago

Provenance:  Northwest Africa

Measurements:  23.5 cm x 11.4 cm

Comments:  Excessive wind exposure erosion.  Brick red on flat side from laying against the dark red colored soil and retaining the same mineral on the surface.  Other side lay up and was subject to the windblown sand blasting and wearing down all but the faintest detail of the groove.  Patinated protected red side shows contrasting groove with better preservation.
